John Gosden's Prix de l'Arc de Triomphe team is spearheaded by the dual winner Enable, but the legendary handler is also set to saddle a fascinating challenger in the shape of marathon king Stradivarius, who will drop back in trip in a bid to win the prestigious European prize in Paris on October 4. Dominant over staying trips, Stradivarius has a glittering CV which includes no less than three Ascot.

One of the biggest horse races in the world takes place this Sunday and history could be made should superstar mare Enable win the Prix de l'Arc de Triomphe for an unprecedented third time. But there have been many wondrous performances in this top-class French Group One race since its' inception in 1920 with an enviable roll-call of winners, many of whom were household names. Sunday at Longchamp developed into a tale of two girls, although racing fans didn't get the result many had hoped for with Enable failing in her bid to become the first horse to win the coveted Prix de l'Arc de Triomphe crown for a third time ended in defeat. Little over one hour previous to Enable's defeat however, history was made when Jessica Marcialis became the first female rider to land a Group One victory in France when she steered 8/1 chance Tiger Tanaka to victory in the Prix. Sunday sees record-breaking mare Enable aimed at one more piece of history in probably her final competitive outing - an unprecedented third victory in Europe's richest race, the Prix de l'Arc de.

Get the Timeform verdict for each contender for the 2020 Prix de l'Arc de Triomphe at Longchamp in our runner-by-runner guide.

1 - Persian King (7) Andre Fabre/Pierre-Charles Boudot

Boasts a superb strike rate and made it 3 wins for the year when seeing off Pinatubo in the Prix du Moulin (1m) here last month. One of the more classy ones but very hard to see him staying this trip.

2 - Royal Julius (8) J. Reynier/Shane Foley

Some good runs this year without adding to his November Bahrain success. Huge surprise if he's involved.

Who

3 - Way To Paris (6) Andrea Marcialis/Ioritz Mendizabal

Has had a good year, landing his first Group 1 in the Prix de Saint-Cloud in June. Poor run in the Prix Foy over C&D 3 weeks ago though and hard to fancy in this.

4 - Japan (11) Aidan O'Brien/Yutaka Take (Non-runner)

Very smart 3-y-o, his wins including the Grand Prix de Paris over C&D, while he was fourth in this. 2020 has been a letdown and Ryan Moore jumps ship but not the biggest surprise to see a revival.

5 - Sovereign (10) Aidan O'Brien/Mickael Barzalona (Non-runner)

Caused a surprise when making all in the 2019 Irish Derby. Not so good this year, including when fancied in the Irish St Leger last time, but will handle conditions in the firing line. Roulette methods winning.

6 - Stradivarius (14) John Gosden/Olivier Peslier

Has led all before him in the British staying division since 2018 and ran a good race in the Prix Foy over C&D last month. Stronger pace/softer ground sure to suit and he's one of the key players.

7 - Sottsass (4) Jean-Claude Rouget/Cristian Demuro

One of the top 3-y-os in 2019, third in this after winning the Prix Niel over C&D, and has held his form well this term, catching the eye in the Irish Champion 3 weeks ago. Major player back here.

8 - Enable (5) John Gosden/Frankie Dettori

Superstar mare who won this in 2017 and 2018 and was a fine second last year. Easy wins in small fields the last twice and proven under the conditions. Everything looks set fair for her to make history.

9 - Deirdre (12) Mitsuru Hashida/Jamie Spencer

Smart Japanese mare who landed the Nassau at Goodwood in 2019. Plenty of creditable runs since but unlikely to be winning this.

10 - Gold Trip (9) Fabrice Chappet/Stephane Pasquier

Smart colt who won Lyon Group 2 over 11f in June and was much improved behind fellow 3-y-os Mogul and In Swoop in the Grand Prix de Paris over C&D for all he didn't convince with his stamina.

11 - Chachnak (13) Fabrice Vermeulen/Tony Piccone

Took another stride forward when winning the Group 3 Prix du Prince d'Orange over 10f here last month, just holding on. Big step up in trip/class both likely to find him out here.

12 - In Swoop (1) Francis-Henri Graffard/Ronan Thomas

Took a huge step forward when winning the German Derby in July and shaped really well when splitting Mogul and Gold Trip in the Grand Prix de Paris over C&D. Sterner test will suit and could figure.

Has made a fine start, winning 3 of her 5 outings, and caught the eye in the Prix Vermeille over C&D last month, keeping on well in a steadily-run race. Gets the good allowances and wouldn't dismiss.

Timeform Analyst's Verdict

Last year's third SOTTSASS is set for a big run and is selected at the prices. He was closing in on Enable all the time 12 months ago, this scenario looking right up his street, and he emerged with credit in the Irish Champion. The mighty Enable, seeking a historic third win in this, looks sure to go well, as does stablemate Stradivarius, who is bound to relish what could be an attritional Arc.

Rheingold was the fifth British-trained horse to win the race after Comrade, Parth, Migoli and Mill Reef.

The contenders[edit]

The leading French contender for the race was the American-bred three-year-old filly Allez France, the winner of the Critérium des Pouliches, Poule d'Essai des Pouliches, Prix de Diane, Prix d'Ispahan and Prix Vermeille. and Prix Ganay. The other French runners included Tennyson, the winner of the Grand Prix de Paris, Dahlia (Prix Saint-Alary, Irish Oaks, King George VI and Queen Elizabeth Stakes), Lady Berry (Prix de Pomone) and San San the winner of the race in 1972. A five horse British entry was headed by the four-year-old colt Rheingold who had finished runner-up in the 1972 Epsom Derby but produced his best performances in France, winning the Prix Ganay and two runnings of the Grand Prix de Saint-Cloud. The other British challengers were the Yorkshire Oaks winner Attica Meli, the Irish St Leger winner Parnell, the Great Voltigeur Stakes winner Buoy and the improving four-year-old handicapper Firefright. and the Prix de Diane and also included the Eclipse Stakes winner Coup de Feu and the dual Goodwood Cup winner Proverb. Ireland was represented by the four-year-olds Bonne Noel (Ebor Handicap) and Miss Therese and the three-year-olds Ragapan (runner-up in the Irish Derby), Star Appeal and Hurry Harriet. The only challenger from outside Europe was the Argentinian four-year-old Unicornus. Allez France was made the 1.75/1 favourite ahead of Tennyson (5.75/1), Rheingold (7.7/1), Dahlia (8/1) and Lady Berry (8.75/1).[1]

The race[edit]

The outsiders Direct Flight and Authi disputed the early lead ahead of Unicornus, Bonne Noel, Miss Therese, Hard To Beat, Rheingold, Buoy, Balompie and Allez France. On the turn into the straight, Authi held the advantage from Direct Flight, Rheingold and Hard To Beat, with Balompie and Buoy well-placed on the outside and Allez France making progress along the inside rail. Early in the straight, Piggott sent Rheingold into the lead and the British-trained quickly accelerated at least three lengths clear of his rivals. Allez France moved into second place and was the only horse to offer a serious challenge to the leader, but Rheingold stayed on strongly to beat the filly by two and a half lengths. Hard To Beat was four lengths back in third, two lengths ahead of Card King, with Lady Berry, Sang Bleu and Balompie the next to finish.[1]
